History

As a professor at the University of Illinois at Chicago College of Business
Administration, Ralph C. Hybels, Ph.D., published and presented numerous
research studies focused on social networks of strategic alliances in the
biotechnology industry. As a result of this research, Dr. Hybels and his
colleagues were asked to consult with a major pharmaceutical company on the
social networks of key opinion leaders (KOLs) in various markets. It quickly
became apparent to Dr. Hybels that analyzing how KOLs interrelate within social
networks provides a unique perspective on influence patterns in medicine that
could not be discerned through more traditional market research. To capitalize
on this opportunity, he and Catherine Smith, Ph.D., founded the firm in 1995.

In
1997, the founders moved the company from Chicago to the "Upper
Valley" region of New England. It is presently headquartered in
White River Junction, Vermont. This location, directly across the Connecticut
River from Hanover, New Hampshire, allows easy access to the bountiful
resources of Dartmouth
College.
Over
the years, the company's techniques for KOL identification and
social network analysis have been refined as the firm has evolved
and grown. In 2002, Leadership in Medicine announced the release
of the The Profiler & Social
Network Navigator®, a software application customized
to client needs that ranks KOLs in terms of prominence by applying
an "influence factor" metric and enables the user to easily navigate
through the social network patterns among KOLs in a target market.
By identifying critical leverage points for maximizing the market
impact of any brand, the software reduces expenditures on KOL-oriented
programs while simultaneously enhancing their effectiveness. The company is independent
and privately held. |
